I need to return to St. Tikhon's; hopefully next week there will be an opportunity to do so. It's tempting to just order the books I need off of the website, but a day spent there would just be so refreshing right now. Maybe Friday?
Tonight Andrew, Kelley and I are going to have dinner at a Japanese place she recommends, and then try to get in to see "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". It's always risky trying to see something on opening night, but hopefully we'll be able to get three seats together. I'm expecting to be entertained by the movie, but I doubt that even Tim Burton and Johnny Depp can outdo the original. Gene Wilder's Wonka had such an attitude; it was subtle and fabulous. Always interesting to see another take on a favorite film. I'm also looking forward to Burton's "Corpse Bride", although I'm not sure of the release date.

I spent most of today with Nick at St. Luke's, singing through the Charpentier Te Deum and ordering vast quantities of music from Cliff Hill. There's this nifty solo in the Charpentier in a strange old notation with all of these opportunities for goat trills and wild ornaments. We also ordered the Biber "Rosary Sonatas" to explore. I love new music- oh! I love it!

Are you planning on going to any of the services there on Friday? I've been meaning to make it to more, seeing as didn't go back "home" for the summer.

Next Friday? *sigh* I would love to. South Canaan is about 3 hours away from the Princeton area, where I live, but it's so worth the drive.

Are you close to the area?

Yep. I live about 20 minutes away. I'm a seminarian.

Wow! You know all about it, then.:-) Maybe I will drive up there on Friday. It was so wonderful to be there for the Pilgrimage over Memorial Day weekend, and I was surprised to learn that several people I went to college with are now studying there: Benedict Sheehan and Phil Macryzk (I know I just spelled his last name wrong). They were both a few years ahead of me, so I don't know either of them well, but it was still neat to see them there in May.

Both Benedict and Philip are gone now—Philip graduated and is becoming the music department (yes, you read that right) at St. Herman's Seminary in Alaska, and Benedict is transferring to St. Vlad's. (You must have gone to Westminster Choir College.)

It's "Majkrzak," BTW. :)

Benedict is going to St. Vlad's? Wow- kind of surprises me. I've been told that St. Vlad's is considered more liberal than St. Tikhon's, and I always pegged him as fairly conservative.

I think that's great that Phil is going to Alaska; he's a wonderful organist and it's great that he'll be able to use his gifts there!

I think Benedict is going to St. Vladimir's because there's a more robust music program there, and that's what he really wants to do. He's been doing composition and arranging of liturgical music in particular. I think he's putting out a CD-ROM and/or book of his stuff.

As for Philip, I doubt he'll see much organ time at St. Herman's. :)

*slaps forehead* I can't believe I wrote that. I guess I should have said that at least he'll be using his musical gifts there.:-) What can I say...I've had a long day.:-)

Biber is amazing. Take a listen to Andrew Manze's recording of the Rosary Sonatas. They're AMAZING.

If it's on iTunes, yes. Also at Barnes and Noble they have this listening station thingy where you scan the barcode of the CD and pop on the headphones to listen to a sample of every track. It's great!

Can't say I'm too taken with the Biber ... I'm not a huge fan of early music, BUT ....

Oh my gosh Danni, You must check out this recording ... Don't be fooled, excerpts 1-3 are each of the movements of the double concerto. It's fantastic! The NSO did it at the concert I saw at a few weeks ago, with O'Connor and Nadia as the soloists.
